This icon was commissioned by The Emperor Karl League of Prayer USA / Canada and written in the traditional manner of prayer and fasting by Bulgarian iconographer Alexander Schelechow. This commission was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Daniel Hoven as part of the League’s 2024 Giving Tuesday Campaign. As with all sacred iconography, it is not intended as mere portraiture, but as a “window to Heaven,” revealing the spiritual reality of Blessed Karl in glory.
Blessed Karl is depicted in stillness—his whole being at rest in God. His open gaze reflects a soul attentive to both heaven and earth, prayerfully aware of the needs of his people. His closed lips signify interior silence and contemplation. Surrounded by a radiant halo and set against a field of gold, he is shown living fully in the light of God.
In this icon, Karl is shown as the Grand Master of the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary, an order founded in 1764 by Empress Maria Theresa under the patronage of Saint Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary. Established to honor those who rendered distinguished service to the crown and the Church, the Order came to embody a uniquely Hungarian expression of Catholic kingship—uniting faith, governance, and chivalric duty. Karl is vested in the ceremonial red tunic and the green mantle and cowl of the Order, marked by its distinctive insignia—a green cross set within red and gold and the Grand Cross Star—symbolizing fidelity, sacrifice, and apostolic kingship. This imagery situates Karl not only as a ruler, but as a guardian of a sacred inheritance entrusted to him.
In his hands, Karl bears a jeweled Cross, radiant with the beauty that flows from Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary. Held firmly yet reverently, it reflects Karl’s own vocation: to embrace the Cross not as burden alone, but as the path to glory.
