In 1916, at the height of World War I, Karl ascended the throne as the last emperor of Austria-Hungary. He saw his crown as a charge from God — and spent his reign striving for peace. He remained faithful to that calling to the end: “Thy holy will be done… Jesus.”

From the battlefields of World War I to exile in Madeira, Blessed Karl remained a man of prayer— beginning and ending all things with God. Emperor and king, yet first a husband and father, his life was given to leading others to Heaven.

The Cause for Canonization of Blessed Karl opened just one year after his death in 1923. Devotion has grown ever since, and in 2004 Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed him ‘Blessed.’ Today, that devotion spans six continents as his Cause advances.

Today, a global fellowship of clergy, religious, and laity from every walk of life carries his life and witness into the world — fostering devotion to God, strengthening families, and building faithful communities.
