Poverty of Spirit
“Blessed are the poor in spirit.” — Matthew 5:3
In Madeira, material poverty became part of Karl’s daily life. Yet those around him saw not resentment but gratitude and peace. Freed from possessions, his heart rested entirely in God. We experience this same call whenever we are asked to let go — of control, recognition, or the illusion of self-sufficiency. What appeared as deprivation became for him a deeper freedom. The same grace is given to us whenever we learn to depend on God alone.
Blessed Karl, teach us holy simplicity. Amen.
