Bold Union: Preparing for Marriage with Karl and Zita is a six-week devotional companion for engaged and married couples, inspired by the life, faith, and marriage of Blessed Karl of Austria and Empress Zita.
Drawing upon moments from their marriage and family life, Bold Union invites couples to spend approximately 30 minutes each day growing in prayer, conversation, and openness to one another. Each day includes a vignette from the lives of Karl and Zita, a reflection on the sacramental bond of marriage, questions for conversation, and short Catholic prayers. For engaged couples, it is designed to complement the marriage preparation received through their parish or diocese; for married couples, it offers an opportunity to revisit and deepen the vows already made.
Edited by Suzanne Pearson, Cathy Pearson, Fr. Jordan Hainsey, and Rev. Britton Hennessey, the book brings the witness of Karl and Zita into conversation with the joys, sacrifices, and responsibilities of Christian marriage today.
Eight original illustrations were commissioned by the Emperor Karl League of Prayer U.S.A. and Canada from American Post-Pop artist and illustrator John Ritter, whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Time, GQ, The New York Times, and Harper’s. Created from historic photographs in the Gebetsliga Archive, the illustrations are Ritter’s first collection of religious-themed works, offering a bold contemporary interpretation of familiar images of Karl and Zita.
Designed by Fr. Jordan Hainsey, Bold Union features a soft-touch cover, bright white paper stock, and vibrant full-color imagery throughout.
