Redemptive Suffering
“No one has greater love than this.” — John 15:13
During his final illness, Karl spoke repeatedly of offering his suffering for the reconciliation of his peoples. His concern was not for his own fate, but for those who had been entrusted to him. Even as his strength diminished, his love continued to expand.
We often think of self-gift in dramatic terms, yet most of our offering takes place in the hidden acceptance of daily sacrifices — the patience that is required, the fatigue that is endured, the love that continues without recognition.
Karl’s last months show us that a life becomes complete when it is given. The measure of its success is not what has been achieved, but what has been offered.
Blessed Karl, help us to make our lives an offering of love. Amen.
